Many students of Ekiti State University, Ado-ekiti have been rendered homeless following the collapse of their residence after a rainfall last Friday.
A building housing about 50 occupants who are majorly students in the University collapsed at about 8:00pm after a brief rainfall. The building is located at Odo-odo street, Iworoko Ekiti.
In an interview with one of the victims, Adejumo Oluwaseun, a 200 level student of Marketing department, she narrated how the rain entered into their compound and wrecked their hostel.
“The rain started around 8pm and it kept on falling, before we knew it, the compound was filled with water, likewise our apartment. We had to leave quickly when the compound was becoming flooded. I think the flood was caused by poor drainage system” she said.
Another victim, Familugba Esther, a 300 level student of Sociology department revealed that the building was secured as hostel by the university students.
She further stated that it never occurred to them that the building will collapse, saying it all started as a joke until it dawned on them.
“It started as a joke and it wasn’t even a serious downpour. Before we knew it, everywhere became flooded. We lost our foodstuffs, school documents and properties were soaked in water. It is very painful, some couldn’t control their emotions as they were seen crying” she said.
However, another victim who identified himself as Olamilekan Solomon, a 200 level student of English and Literary studies disclosed that the flood was caused by a flowing river from Oye-Ekiti.
“It wasn’t a serious rainfall that could cause destruction but I think the river at the back of the hostel flowing from Oye-Ekiti to Ifaki caused everything” he said.
It was learnt that the building is owned by a Professor in the University in one of the departments.
